In-line autonomous leak detection system
Aging infrastructure and replacement costs are major challenges for local water utilities. With populations increasing and available freshwater resources decreasing, water and wastewater distribution pipelines need to be maintained to prevent water loss and damage to the surrounding environment. Pure Technologies provides clients with the information needed to fully understand the actual condition of their infrastructure. Based on these assessments, water supply system managers can establish a meaningful cost-savings plan for the rehabilitation and long-term maintenance of their lines.
The company introduced SmartBall in 2005 with particular emphasis on loss prevention in the water and wastewater sector. SmartBall is an in-line autonomous leak detection system which does not require the pipeline to be decommissioned. It can survey long pipelines efficiently, accurately and cost-effectively.
Following two years of development and field trials, SmartBall was commercialised in June 2007. Since then, the technology has been used to survey over 4,000 kilometres of oil, water and wastewater pipelines of different materials for many different agencies in North America, Australia, Asia, Europe, UAE, Oman, Qatar, and KSA, and has identified many leaks, several of which have been verified and repaired.
A number of agencies that have used SmartBall include the City of Calgary and the City of Airdrie (both in Canada); City of New Orleans; Birmingham, Alabama and Allentown, Pennsylvania, as well as Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA).
Pure Technologies is currently proposing to provide the Municipal Corporation for Greater Mumbai (MCGM) the SmartBall system for large diameter pipelines, which MCGM can deploy to efficiently locate losses (leaks) from transmission pipelines.
