The spiral-wound polyamide composite membranes are specially designed for treating water in industrial applications.

Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has launched five new types of Lewabrane membrane separation elements for Reverse Osmosis (RO). Currently, HR (high rejection) types with membrane surface areas of 370 and 440 square feet and HF (high flow) types with membrane surface areas of 370, 400 and 440 square feet are available.

Alan Sharpe, head of the RO Membrane Strategic Project in LANXESS’s Ion Exchange Resins business unit said: “Our HR type elements are designed to provide extremely low salt passage in normal operation, with more than 99.7% salt rejection measured under standard conditions. The high rejection for critical ions like silica is also remarkable.”

The Lewabrane RO product types consist of spiral wound polyamide composite membranes specially designed for treating water in industrial applications. Fields of application include the desalination of brackish and low-salinity waters, groundwater remediation and the production of boiler feed water required in power stations. The RO technology also facilitates demineralisation by particle removal in microchip manufacture.

The elements in the Lewabrane RO product family have a standard length of 40 inches (1,016 mm) and a diameter of either eight inches (201 mm) or four inches (101 mm).

The press release pointed out that Lewabrane B090 HF 4040, the membrane element with a diameter of four inches, has a unique anti-telescopic device (ATD) design. It claimed that thanks to a structure with ATDs at the ends of the elements, surface area of the membranes exceeds that of other commercially available elements by almost six per cent, resulting in higher water productivity. The permeate flow rate, the press release continued, is 9.4 m3/day on average under standard conditions, with a salt rejection of 99.5%.

“The combination of membrane filtration and ion exchange ensures that efficiency and economy can go hand in hand in industrial applications,” said Sharpe. Since the group offers both technologies, such process combinations are particularly attractive. “Our tried and tested Lewatit ion exchange resins and the new Lewabrane membrane elements can provide good cost performance, for example in the preparation of feed water for downstream EDI applications.”

The membrane elements provide a stable lower-salinity permeate to minimise the load in downstream ion exchange and electrodeionisation (EDI) operations, thus improving the cost-performance ratio. The detailed descriptions of Lewabrane RO elements can be found online at www.lewabrane.com

Hydro-Brake Optimum can be designed to balance flow rates and surface water storage to the requirements of the site.

Hydro International has launched the Hydro Brake Optimum, a new flow control for surface water, foul and combined sewer systems. The product was launched at the IFAT Entsorga Exhibition in Munich last month.

The new Hydro-Brake Optimum unit sizing, the company claims, enables fine-tuning according to the site priorities. For example, it may be important to maximise hydraulic performance or to choose a more compact design to account for site constraints such as pipe diameter or chamber retrofit. Hydro-Brake Optimum can be designed to balance flow rates and surface water storage requirements to the conditions of a development site. Hydro International claims that any site with Hydro-Brake Optimum will now need up to 15% less storage than if an alternative were used. By saving on surface water storage, Hydro-Brake Optimum claims to deliver savings in excavation costs and frees up more land for building to maximise the developers’ Return on Investment.

Alex Stephenson, Director of Hydro’s UK Stormwater Division, said: “It’s no secret that other products on the market are based on Hydro technology. With Hydro-Brake Optimum, we have set the next generation performance standard. In future it will be particularly important for designers and contractors to realise that the new Hydro-Brake Optimum has no equivalent. It can be tempting for a contractor to try to change from the specified flow control, but in the case of Hydro-Brake Optimum this would result in a change of the engineered performance and could lead to flooding.”

According to the company, the new adjustable inlet plates in Hydro-Brake Optimum provide up to 20% alteration in the forward flow rate as future-proofing against climate change or site-modifications and up to 20% larger clearances than other flow controls, which reduces the risk of blockage. The product is manufactured out of high grade Stainless Steel. Time saving installation options including, lugs, push-fit spigots, flat or curved mounting plates, penstock or slide mounts and removable units. The Hydro-Brake Optimum is also available pre-fitted to a purpose-built precast reinforced concrete chamber. For more information about the new Hydro-Brake Optimum, e-mail: enquiries (at) hydro-international.co.uk

The new AmaDS³ is a combination of a patented, dry-installed solids separation system and two wastewater pumps in back pull-out design

At IFAT 2012, KSB Aktiengesellschaft will present an innovative solids separation system for wastewater disposal in pumped drainage applications. According to the press release issued by the company, the new AmaDS³ is a combination of a patented, dry-installed solids separation system and two wastewater pumps in back pull-out design which, the press release claimed, provides economic efficiency and operating reliability.

The raw wastewater flows into a separator where the solids are separated from the liquid. The solids-free wastewater then flows into a collecting tank until a pre-set level is reached. The pump set is started up via a control system and pumps the wastewater from the collecting tank into the discharge line. During this operation, the solids are flushed out of the separator and into the discharge pipe as well. The pump set is switched off once the wastewater level in the collecting tank has gone down to the pre-set minimum level. At this point the inflow check valve opens automatically and raw sewage can again flow into the separator.

As the wastewater handled by the pump’s hydraulic system is mechanically treated, pumps with smaller free passages and highly efficient hydraulic systems can be used, which the press release claimed, enables energy savings while keeping operating costs down. Since the pumps handle solids-free water only, the risk of wear and clogging is extremely low. The release further claimed that AmaDS³ makes for a viable solution even with high heads or long discharge lines. In addition, the service life of the entire station is longer than that of conventional systems.

Other features of AmaDS³ include:

• All main components are redundant.

• The pumps as well as the system’s most important components can be reached comfortably and without getting wet.

• The separators are located outside the collecting tank, which ensures that the system can be serviced or repaired while it is in operation.

• The collecting tank is gas-tight and features a central vent.

The new AmaDS3 is available in six different sizes. Its maximum head is 85 metres and the maximum inflow rate 120 m3/hour.

The range is targeted at the water and wastewater industry's medium pressure compressed air applications

Most contractors or end-users within the water and wastewater treatment industry typically use the conventional ‘tri-lobe’ roots blowers for large volume, low pressure air requirements below 1 bar(g). However in the Middle East, the high ambient temperatures coupled with the very basic scope of a conventional ‘tri-lobe’ blower, which relies on splash lubrication, can cause huge problems, which may lead to frequent maintenance interventions or even worse, a complete failure of the blower. To cater to the requirements of the region’s water and wastewater industry, Atlas Copco has recently launched the new ZS screw blower range, which is TÜV certified as 100% oil-free (ISO 8573-1 CLASS 0) in the Middle East.

In general, oil-free screw compressors are relied upon in the industry for medium pressure compressed air for critical applications. The key design features of ZS range include a direct drive without belts and an onboard forced lubrication system for gears and bearing which the company ensures a lower operating temperature within the blower, and thus assures blower reliability and efficiency in hot climates such as the Middle East. The company has further claimed that the ZS oil-free screw blowers are capable of operating uninterrupted with an ambient temperature up to 55°C.

Unlike a conventional tri-lobe blower which relies on external compression, screw blowers compress air internally, which leads to much lower energy consumption. Atlas Copco claims that the ZS screw blower range provides average energy savings of up to 30% compared to their tri-lobe predecessors. The performance of the new ZS screw blower was tested against a tri-lobe blower by the independent Technische Überwachungs-Verein (German Technical Monitoring Association, or TÜV), according to the international standard ISO 1217, edition 4. As per TÜV test results, the ZS is 23.8% more energy-efficient than a tri-lobe blower at 0.5 bar(e)/7psig, and 39.7% at 0.9 bar(e)/13 psig.

ZS+ blowers come equipped with as standard an onboard variable speed drive (VSD), complete instrumentation and ‘Elektronikon’ blower controller, which allows operation in both local and remote modes and permits remote monitoring of critical blower parameters, which Atlas Copco claims is a new proposition for the water and wastewater industry.

Al Moubayed, Regional Business Line Manager at Atlas Copco Services Middle East, said: “We strongly believe that screw blowers will revolutionise the market for low pressure compressed air. In the UAE, Atlas Copco has recently opened a new customer centre in Al-Quoz, Dubai to better cater to the requirements of our customers.” For more information, visit www.efficiencyblowers.com

Full port ball valve targeted at high-pressure applications in the water treatment industry

Victaulic, a leading manufacturer of mechanical pipe joining systems, has launched Series 726D Super Duplex Stainless Steel Vic-Ball Valve, which the company claims can withstand pressures of up to 8,200 kPa (1,200 psi), and thus, suited to high-pressure applications in corrosive environments, such as Reverse Osmosis (RO) and desalination piping systems.

Series 726D is grooved-end, high-pressure, full-port ball valve, which Victaulic avers, provides faster, easier and safer installation than flanged or butt-weld valves. It is connected with the Victaulic Style 489DX rigid coupling, which requires only two bolts to form a secure joint.

“Field assembly is extremely fast,” claimed Stephen Morrison, Global Water Systems Technology Market Director at Victaulic. “And with a smaller profile than a flanged valve assembly, the Series 726D also achieves significant space savings, allowing it to be installed with ease in tight spaces. This makes it extremely attractive for engineers in our market.” Victaulic literature describes the new valve’s flow characteristics as ‘excellent’ and claims lower energy usage than more restrictive types of valves.

Other design features include:

The two-piece, end-entry design features a floating ball for lower torque requirements.

Patent-pending composite seat design provides bubble-tight sealing ability for high- and low-pressure requirements. A stem seal cartridge enables easy stem seal replacement.

The valve features an ISO 5211 standard mounting pattern for convenient mounting of remote actuation, including a full range of power actuators and is available in 60-150 mm (2-6 inches) sizes.

Victaulic, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of mechanical pipe joining systems, has launched StrengThin Piping System, which enables direct pipe-end forming of the new groove profile on Schedule 10S and Schedule 20 Duplex and Super Duplex stainless steel pipe up to 16 inches in diameter.

The StrengThin groove is formed using proprietary end-forming technology, which the company claims, creates a unique groove profile for superior joint strength. The groove and sealing surfaces are ‘lifted’ above the interior diameter (ID) of the pipe.

According to the press release issued by Victualic, StrengThin technology helps reduce plant construction costs by allowing thinner-wall Duplex or Super Duplex stainless steel pipe to be used on high-pressure piping systems; it saves time by accelerating pipe fabrication and installation, thereby reducing the piping construction schedule and allowing more time for testing, commissioning and plant turnover.

“The StrengThin system can significantly cut piping installation time for an entire high-pressure piping system, lower costs, improve safety and reduce project risk during the construction of desalination facilities,” said Stephen Morrison, Global Water Systems Technology Market Director, Victaulic. “It is a groundbreaking product that will have a major impact on the industry.”

The Victaulic StrengThin Piping System includes a full range of couplings, fittings, valves and a pipe preparation tool. StrengThin couplings are available as rigid or flexible, and all StrengThin couplings feature the Victaulic proprietary anti-biofouling Grade ‘EW’ gasket. The Grade ‘EW’ gasket is designed using a Victaulic-engineered compound that does not contribute to microbiological growth.

Through an exclusive relationship between Victaulic and MTS Valves and Technology, the StrengThin system also features Super Duplex high-pressure plug valves from MTS with StrengThin grooved ends for easy field installation, which the press release explained, eliminates the need for valves to be sent to a fabrication shop to be welded onto pipe spools.

The StrengThin Piping System includes a range of Super Duplex fittings, including elbows, tees, caps and reducers. The fittings are cast with StrengThin grooved ends, which the company claims, enables quick and easy field installation. A union at every joint provides easy system access when needed.

The StrengThin system is offered in 50-400 millimeter (2-16 inch) sizes and is rated up to 8,200 kPa (1,200 psi) with a minimum safety factor of three to one.

The new range of SMD pumps designed for raw and clean water applications

Sulzer Pumps has developed a complete new range of SMD pumps designed for raw and clean water applications. The new axially split pumps represent the evolution of Sulzer Pumps’ traditional SM and SMN pump series.

A press release issued by the company noted that the SMD is designed with the tightest technical specifications in mind, and meets the highest levels of efficiency and suction performance for current and future process demands. The release also claimed that customers also benefit from a more robust, long lasting, and easy-to-maintain pump.

The new pumps, the press announcement continued, is targeted at high volume applications, such as water intake, water treatment, water transport and municipal supply, as well as for distribution of heating and cooling media in residential and industrial systems. Further, the new pumps can also be used in desalination systems, both Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Multi Effect Distillation (MED) plants, and also fire-fighting, irrigation and drainage applications.

The innovative design of the new SMD pumps, the press release noted, provides for a longer life-cycle, greater reliability and cost efficiency. The compact hydraulic dimensions, with fewer parts, contribute to more cost-effective manufacturing processes. According to the press release, by providing the optimum hydraulic fit for each duty point, the new pumps help reduce energy consumption, deliver greater hydraulic performance over a wide range of flows and also offer exceptional suction performance with low spell out NPSH first (NPSH), which, in turn, provides increased flexibility when planning pumping stations with sustained high efficiency levels. With improved hydraulic design, the pumps work at lowest vibration levels for longer bearing life. In addition, the bearing span is minimised and the casing thickness is optimised to help ensure lower weight and improve mechanical reliability.

The standard range is available in 20 sizes, each including a minimum of two hydraulic options achieved through exchangeable impellers, which the press release explained, optimizes product and inventory costs. Because the SMD pumps have fewer parts with extensive inter-changeability, customers can reduce inventory levels and benefit from faster delivery of parts as needed. Vertical installation is a standard option with the same upper and lower casing parts. The mechanical design allows for easy maintenance and reduces maintenance time during shutdowns. For example, bearings and mechanical seals can be replaced without removing the upper casing.

Enhanced sensors for measuring pure and ultra-pure water

When measuring pure and ultra-pure water, the cell constants of the sensors are crucial for getting the best measurement results. When measuring ultra-pure water of optimum quality (below 1 μS/cm), it is essential to use a measuring cell with the cell constant K = 0.01. Cells with K = 0.1 are used in the range 10 μS/cm to a maximum of approximately 500 μS/cm.

The expansion of the JUMO tecLine Lf-VA series (as per Data Sheet 202924) has resulted in the development of two new measuring cells (K = 0.1 and K = 0.01). Shortening the active measurement electrodes allows them to be installed for smaller pipe diameters and lower sample volumes.

The sensor is designed to the hygienic design standards of EHEDG for shape and materials and to ASTM International and Pharmacopoeia Europaea rules as well, which makes it suitable for use in ultra-pure water systems in the pharmaceutical, food and biotechnology industries. It can be used in pure and ultra-pure water systems for technical washing processes (RO systems, ion exchangers).

The wetted parts are made from electro-polished quality stainless steel 1.4435 (316L). Compliance certificates with EN 10204 3.1 and roughness certificates (better than 0.8μm as per Ph. Eur. and ASTM International) are also provided. The seals and plastics used to meet the requirements of the FDA are physiologically safe. For pharmaceutical water systems, the cell constants can be measured and confirmed by an ASTM test certificate. Electrical connection is made via M12 connectors. A Pt1000, Class A, is integrated for temperature acquisition.

The sensor has been fitted with EHEDG-approved JUMO PEKA process connection system. Thanks to modular design, the sensor can be quickly fitted with any process connection the customer requires. A suitable adapter (e.g. clamp, VARIVENT, milk cone, welded adapter) is screwed onto the sensor as a module. For further details, please email Tahsin.Sayman@jumo.net
