Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance and Manpower Tharman Shanmugaratnam launches the Singapore International Water Week 2011
Singapore Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Finance & Manpower, Tharman Shanmugaratnam was Guest of Honour at the Opening Ceremony, which was attended by more than 1,800 guests. In his speech he said that the journey towards water security will always be a work in progress for Singapore, as new challenges emerge in the urban environment. He added that these challenges are not unique to Singapore – cities around the world will have to contend with issues such as weather extremities in the context of urbanisation, increasing water demand, and higher public expectations. He urged the water community to take collective action to surmount these challenges.
This year’s Singapore International Water Week, which runs from 4th – 8th July, is themed ‘Sustainable Water Solutions for a Changing Urban Environment.’ The annual platform for water solutions brings together the global water community to address the most pertinent water challenges amid a rapidly urbanising world.
