• Event Synopsis

The Annual H20 Water Awards celebrates the outstanding achievements of organisations and individuals who have contributed to the advancement of the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region’s water industry.

What probably distinguishes us in the not-so-crowded world of water industry awards is our home - the MENA, undeniably the most water scarce region in the world.

The Annual H20 Water Awards is organised by Dubai-based Corporate Publishing International (CPI), the publisher of H20 magazine, which has ardently championed the cause of the region’s water sector from its inception in 2006. The awards programme highlights the pivotal role of the water industry in the region’s economic and social development and the protection of its environment.

The second edition of the Annual H2O Water Awards was held on 23rd November, 2011 at the Asateer Tent, Atlantis, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai. The host for the evening was the distinguished international water industry expert Stuart Hamilton, who also serves in key roles in global organisations like the International Water Association (IWA), European Water Resources Association (EWRA) and American Water Works Association (AWWA). During the gala dinner, winners in the Project and Product categories were presented with a magnificent crystal trophy.

The event is profiled in detail in the November-December 2011 issue of H20.

    Best Water Project — Winner

The winner is EMCO/SBG-PCM combination for their Nanofiltration Project in Hail, Saudi Arabia. Providing pure drinking water for one million people in Hail province, the plant is the largest of its kind in the Middle East and the second largest nanofiltration system worldwide. The 150,000 m3/day plant is being jointly constructed by EMCO and Saudi Bin Ladin Group (SBG) – PCM division for the Ministry of Water and Electricity, Hail Directorate.

    Best Wastewater Project — Winner

UAE-based Metito won the award for its Yas Island project which involved constructing, executing and putting into operation new sewage treatment works to serve the Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix track. The project will utilise a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) process to produce high quality effluent for safe use in open irrigation. Yas Island doesn’t have access to main drainage system in Abu Dhabi, so the plant helped the client serve both domestic and commercial districts.

Innovative use/application of technology — Winner

EPIC Green Technologies won the award for demonstrating the efficacy of their Environmental Passive Integrated Chamber (EPIC) water management system in sub-surface irrigation projects in the UAE, in Yas Island and Al Ain. The EPIC system achieves efficient water management through natural drainage processes and the reuse of water for passive irrigation, via capillary physics. It has the ability to use potable, brackish, TSE and sea water and also uses 50-80% less water than traditional irrigation systems.

    Water Efficiency Leader — Winner

The winner is Gulf Contracting Company-BIONEST alliance for their project which treats 1.4 million gallons of sewage from one of their labour camps into equivalent recycled water per month, saving approximately Qatari Riyals two million a year. Twenty per cent of the recycled water is used at source and the rest is transported to their construction sites for use in a host of construction related activities. The system conserves potable water produced through costly and energy intensive desalination. The avoidance of sludge removal reduces traffic congestion, minimises carbon emissions and reduces the load on the government's sewage treatment plants. The company is in the process of doubling its output to three million gallons/month.

    Water Communications Award — Winner

Heriot Watt University Dubai won the award for their pioneering initiative in launching the Middle East’s first Msc Programme in Water Resources. Given the significance of water resources issues in the Gulf region, the course aims to provide students with a sound understanding of sustainable water resources issues by developing the knowledge and skills necessary for, engineering, planning and management of water resources.

    Best Wastewater Product — Winner

Grundfos won the award for their product Auto Adapt, which simplifies pump pit management while ensuring that the pump is always operating on the most efficient performance curve.

Most Innovative Product or Technology — Winner

Design International won the award for their product Falcon Waterfree Urinals. In the past year, Dubai Municipality (DM) retrofitted 410 water-flush urinals to Falcon Waterfree urinals in 45 locations in Dubai. Thus, a seemingly un-important technology has managed to save Dubai Municipality 52.8 million litres of potable water, which is equivalent to Dh 592000 under current rates.

    Water Efficient Product — Winner

Byrne Equipment Rental won the award for their product Trailer Mounted Flexi Loo System. The system, targeted at large-scale events, is aesthetically engineered to provide water savings and is self contained. Only half a litre of water is used per flush compared to a normal toilet which uses six litres per flush, resulting in a significant saving of water consumption. The product is trailer mounted so requires no heavy machinery to lift/move around. During each flush, air is sucked out of the cubicle, sucking bacteria into a sealed system, rather than being atomised into the room.
