    International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture

International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) nominated their work for the Abu Dhabi Water Resources Master Plan. ICBA was commissioned by the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, through the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD), to undertake a comprehensive assessment of supply and use of water in the Emirate and propose strategic policy recommendations to support future water security.

Best Water Consultancy — Runner up

    MWH Middle East

MWH Middle East's entry was the Jebel Ali Sewage Treatment Plant project, where MWH is providing engineering consultant, supervision of construction and commissioning engineer services.

Innovative Use / Application of Technology — Winner

    Leading Edge Technologies (LET)

LET's integrated technologies for increasing efficiency and output of existing desalination with minimum environmental impact consists of the application of nano-filtration to a portion of the seawater feed as a means to soften the feed to control hard scale, combined with patented plant modifications. The benefits of this approach were demonstrated at desalination plants belonging to Sharjah Electricity & Water Authority (SEWA) and Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA).

Innovative Use / Application of Technology — Runner up

Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry

Dubai Chamber's project involving the use of fountain running on condensate as a heat exchanger for its server room's 20 tonne water-cooled direct expansion air-conditioning system helped the organisation save costs involved in installing and running a cooling tower and the extra costs involved in cooling the server room through the buildings main air-conditioning system.

    Best Wastewater Project — Winner

Eagle Electromechanical & Al Hijaz Mechanical Equipment

Eagle Electromechanical & Al Hijaz Mechanical Equipment's Dubai Sports City Sewage Treatment Plant project stands out for the fact that all the treated wastewater is completely recycled within the Sports City development; a portion of the treated wastewater is also polished to potable water quality. The plant is one of the biggest running MBR plants in the Middle East, in terms of processing volume; further, the entire plant is within totally enclosed construction.

Best Wastewater Project — Runner up

    MWH Middle East

MWH Middle East's entry was the Jebel Ali STP project, which has been planned and designed to be one of the largest in the world, serving an ultimate population of 4.5 million. Some of the innovations in this project were optioneering, odour control system and UV disinfection.

Water / Energy Nexus — Winner

    ABB

ABB won the award for their pilot project 'RO performance monitoring and optimisation'. The solution improves the productivity and energy efficiency of RO desalination systems, and enables the maintenance process for membrane systems to be changed from reactive (preventive) to a predictive condition-based operation and maintenance.

Water / Energy Nexus — Runner up

    NeemTech

The title of NeemTech's entry was Demineralised Power Plant (DM) Plant Ion Exchangers regenerated / backwash wastewater recycling to re-use for cooling tower make-up water.

    Water Efficiency Leader — Winner

    TECOM Investments

Between January 2008 and August 2010, TECOM's 'Water conservation programme' project helped the organisation reduce its water consumption by 144 MIG, reduced CO2 emissions (due to water consumption) by 9,845 tonnes and eliminated 18,763 sewage tanker trips. The project was specially commended by the judges for its right approach, in terms of environmental impacts of water and power savings.

Water Efficiency Leader — Runner up

    Hyatt Regency & Galleria

Hyatt Regency & Galleria's water efficiency and conservation project, which was started in 1977, has several achievements to its credit; to give an example, one of their projects collects condensate water from Air Handling Units, Fan Coil Units and swimming pool backwash water for re-use for cooling tower make-up, saving 3,060,000 gallons a year. Installation of water aerators in the Galleria apartments has given them a saving of 129,000 gallons of water every month.

    Best Water Project — Winner

    Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies' dissolved air flotation or DAF-based pre-treatment system is being installed by the UAE's Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA) to protect their existing Seawater Reverse Osmosis plants against the scourge of algal blooms or 'Red Tide'.

Best Water Project — Runner up

    Septech

Septech's Al Ghubrah Project in the Sultanate of Oman is the world's largest mobile desalination plant, supplying 22.7 million litres of water to the residents of Muscat every day. The structure of the plant, a series of innovative pre-engineered and manufactured Sea Water Reverse Osmosis containers, allows for rapid deployment. The plant will be supplying nearly 10% of the daily potable water needs of one million residents in the Omani capital.

    Water Communications Award

Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry

Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry stands out for its commendable approach to spreading the message of water and energy conservation within the country and the region. The knowledge gained through the execution of innovative and path-breaking water and energy saving projects at its head quarter building has been freely shared by this organisation with members and non-members alike, through various seminars, workshops and media interactions. Dubai Chamber is a great example of walking the talk, becoming the first existing building in the Middle East to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.
